Dexter Townhomes

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON

Working with two families in parallel, CAST designed a duo of townhomes near Lake Union in downtown Seattle. We stitched together spaces between five floors while accommodating the structure needed for multi-level cantilevers over the parking areas. Considerable attention was given to how the facades were grouped, and the way color and pattern emphasized vertical proportions while keeping surfaces in scale. Thoughtful window openings bring lots of natural light and privacy within this tight city lot.

Up from the generous entry on the main floor of the east home, the gathering areas on the next level include the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. Walnut cabinetry throughout the space contrasts with the rich black finishes to set a warm, open, refined tone.

Tall windows accentuate the height of the space and wash floors and ceilings with daylight. The kitchen cabinets run wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling tying the kitchen and dining areas together and adding counter space and valuable storage. A wall of black cabinetry brings continuity and balance to the living room.

A central feature is the crafted wood screen wall and open stair and railing that retains the light, airy feel and connects the floors.

The upper floor houses the primary suite including bedroom, bathroom, office, and deck, plus a stairway that leads to an expansive roof deck atop the townhome. A variety of muted tile in the bathroom results in a quiet and relaxed space with darker wall accents providing focal points, and white wall tiles working with the window to draw your eye around the corner to the soaker tub.
