MODERN BACKYARD COTTAGE — missing middle housing — Bellingham Dadu

Bellingham, Washington

This cottage—or DADU (Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit) has a compact footprint and is situated at the bottom of a sloped site. The beautifully landscaped and wooded property provides both a visual and physical separation from the main residence, striking a balance between togetherness and privacy. The cottage is thoughtfully nestled into the hillside, maximizing the available yard area while seamlessly integrating into its natural setting. The kitchen’s window sills are nearly at grade level, creating a unique sense of being within the forest from inside the cottage.

Efficiency is key. The layout features a bathroom in the front corner of the first floor, allowing the kitchen and dining area to extend the length of the home's footprint. Above the kitchen and bathroom is a sleeping loft, accessed by a wooden ladder, which allows for a vaulted ceiling above the living room, enhancing the sense of space. The living area is brightened by glass doors and multiple windows, further connecting the indoor space to the forested site.

The cottage’s exterior is clad in a dark charcoal board and batten siding, which complements its woodland surroundings. This design choice, along with the extensive use of glass, emphasizes the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, making the cottage feel both cozy and expansive.
